When it comes to finding the perfect mattress, there’s a lot of factors that can play into your decision. You want a mattress that is supportive and will hold up to the test of time, but you need more information to make your choice and we’ve made it easy for you.
We’ve laid out the key differences between us and the competition. We’ll let you decide how we stack up to other mattresses claiming to serve big and tall sleepers or plus size couples. (We’re pretty confident).
We started Big Fig with the purpose of creating the perfect mattress for the underserved plus size community. We believe every amazing body deserves an amazing bed so we’ve thoughtfully designed the perfect mattress with you in mind. To be honest, we’re really proud of it.
Every aspect of our design was made to combat typical issues that can happen with competitor mattress companies like mattress sag, loss of softness and comfort, poor back and pressure point support, and no edge support. Whether you are a back sleeper, side sleeper or stomach sleeper, Big Fig is there to provide the perfect design for best in class comfort and support for YOU.
For a quick look at how we stack up against ALL our competition, be sure to check out the fullcompetitor comparison chart. We’re here to make sure you’re finding a mattress that’s perfect for you.
For more comprehensive testing and reviews of our Big Fig mattress vs. these so called “competitors”, read on. To date we’ve taken a long look at:
- Bear Hybrid
- GhostBed Flex
- Layla Hybrid
- Purple Hybrid
- Helix Nightfall
- Winkbeds Plus
- Titan
- Saatva Loom & Leaf
- Saatva HD
When shopping for your new mattress, please keep in mind that we are the only company that started with and maintains our sole focus on building a mattress from the ground up for heavy people and heavy couples. That means (even though we think our name is pretty clever) we don’t need any fancy branding and terminology to sway you.
Now we’re not saying these other companies don’t make a good mattress, what we are saying is that we focus on one thing and one thing only. Sure, these mattresses work for lots of people out there, but we did not come across one mattress in our rigorous testing that could hold a candle to our Big Fig mattress when it comes to supporting bigger figures.
When you lay it all out on the line and put your product up against all the other options, the bias goes out the window and it comes down to straight facts proven by test results.
That’s why we put our money where our mouth is and purchased each mattress from our fellow mattress brands, dropped weights on them, cut them open, counted the coils and looked at the overall construction.

Now, we’ve done the heavy lifting and have provided a recap below so you can quickly see we mean it when we say the Big Fig mattress is superior for heavier people and heavy couples. If you’re still on the fence after this, you can also check out the full comparison review blog.
If you don’t see the mattress you are considering vs. the Big Fig, let us know! We’re always up for a challenge.
Big Fig Vs. Bear Hybrid
The Bear Hybrid mattress is an easy start. We definitely get the feeling this bed was not designed for you, the plus size sleeper or the plus size couple. Bear failed both the weight and edge support test - the test where we dropped a bunch of weights onto the mattresses to see how they held up. You can see with your own two beautiful eyes that the Big Fig mattress can support the weight, plus has superior edge support.
We also found their warranty quite peculiar and frustrating if you were to ever need it. Our warranty has you in mind, theirs feels like they really don’t want to help you. If you want to see more, click the link above for the full review of the warranty, plus everything else.
Big Fig Vs. GhostBed Flex
The first sign that the Ghostbed Flex is not actually designed for heavy people, or especially heavy couples for that matter, is that their mattress is not as firm. The firmness level is a 6-7 vs. ours at a 7-8. Might not seem like much of a difference, but our firmness level is optimal for plus size sleepers and we can’t say the same for the Ghostbed.
Like others we have reviewed, this is another “competitor” of ours that uses memory foam, and while this might sound like a fancy feature, our research shows this is not a feature you want in a mattress designed for heavy people.
Memory foam is simply not supportive. If you have ever laid down on a Tempurpedic, you sink slowly into the bed and it’s a weird sensation that we are just not fans of!
They unfortunately (for them) failed the weight and edge support test. They claim that if you do need a truly more supportive mattress than the Flex, you have to buy their more expensive, king only option. So you’re out of luck if you need a Queen or something smaller to fit in that trendy studio loft of yours. If you still need convincing here, click the link above and read at your own risk.
Big Fig Vs. Layla Hybrid
During our comparison, we found one major thing very odd about the Layla Hybrid mattress - It’s flippable. Now why on Earth would you need a flippable mattress? Your mattress either fits your needs or it doesn’t. We figure they are just trying to capture the biggest audience possible, without prioritizing true and tangible support.
Plus we suspect this is one of the reasons why the Layla mattress failed all of the weight and edge support tests. If you are a heavier person or a heavier couple, we don’t think the Layla is the best option for you as you likely will not find the support you need.
Big Fig Vs. Purple Hybrid
Purple is a good mattress, sure. But when we get into the weeds we can plainly see they have no true edge support and can’t handle above 270 lbs of weight distribution. In fact, Purple’s grid design couldn’t even handle the 135 lbs we placed on it to test weight support.
Now, I don’t know about you, but we certainly expect more. The plus side is that this mattress is domestically produced in the USA (but so are we).
As far as a trial period and warranty, sorry but we take the trophy here too. At Big Fig you can expect a 120 night trial and a 20 year warranty VS. a 100 night trial and 10 year warranty over at Purple. Still not convinced? Read the full comparison above in the title link above and make your own judgment.
Big Fig Vs. Helix Nightfall
Our most significant takeaway from our comparison review is that we at Big Fig designed one mattress - ONE mattress just for YOU. Helix designed a mattress that you can “tweak” to your needs. But how would you know what exact tweaks you would need for this to be the best option for you? Seems like a headache to us!
Then here are some other comparison factors that we know makes choosing a Big Fig a no brainer.
When it comes to manufacturing we are made in one factory in Cleveland, Ohio where we completely control the quality. Helix is made in various factories across the country so how can we be sure the quality of the mattresses produced are going to be identical?
You can also expect a 15 year warranty but ONLY for the Helix mattress so good luck if anything else needs coverage… Yikes.
Big Fig boasts a 20 year warranty and will happily cover the mattress, foundation, and even frameif needed.
But don’t take our word for it, read the full comparison above and get the all the facts.
Big Fig Vs. Winkbeds Plus
The main takeaway after we compared ourselves to WinkBeds, is they are selling you a firmer mattress. They did not take the time to develop a mattress from the ground up for heavy people specifically.
Any mattress company can sell you their firmer mattress, but only one company can sell you a mattress specifically designed for you.
The Big Fig mattress is specifically designed not to sag, which we ensured with our top of line foam quality. WinkBeds uses lower density foam, a memory foam, that is not adequate for plus size sleepers. WinkBeds also has a measly 858 coil count vs. our 1,200 coil count when comparing the queen size for both.
Quite frankly, WinkBeds return policy does not have you, the one buying and sleeping, in mind. They make you keep your purchase for 30 days until you can initiate a return. Probably with the hopes that you will just become complacent and not want to deal with the return as time goes on.
Big Fig’s return policy is a 2 week request, because we want you to really have time to adjust to the bed, but we also don’t force you to keep it. Return away if the bed is not for you.

Big Fig Vs. Titan
Just like others we’ve reviewed, the Titan mattress dramatically failed the weight stress test. This is probably the most important factor when it comes to finding a mattress for heavy people and heavy couples.
Looking at the build of the Titan, the coil count test came in very underwhelming with Titan coming in at 760 coils in the queen mattress and 961 coils in the king mattress. Big Fig has 1,200 coils in the queen and 1,600 in the king. When it comes to isolating motion and contoured support, that is a huge difference!
Now, what about the cushion? Memory foam may sound like a fancy feature for a mattress but if you are a plus size sleeper, this is not something you want. We have found through our studies that memory foam used on mattresses for heavier people, tends to lead to sagging and not the support you had in mind.
If you are a heavier set person, you most likely sleep hot. Big Fig utilizes THERMOGEL COOLING ® technology that is built into our mattress and is not an added feature. Titan wants to charge you $250 for an additional cooling top panel.
And lastly, when it comes to warranty, once again Big Fig wins. 20 years vs. 10 years from Titan, it’s a no-brainer. The return policy is unfortunately the same exact scenario as WinkBeds, which again is not a customer first focused return policy.
Check out the article above and learn all the ways Big Fig takes the cake over the Titan mattress.
Big Fig Vs. Saatva HD
Let’s discuss the elephant in the room. The Saatva HD is more than double the price of a Big Fig mattress. This isn’t a contest, this is highway robbery.
Then of course, once again, another one bites the dust when it comes to the weight and edge support test. Now, how is this mattress supposed to support you while you get your beauty sleep? Yeah, we’d like to know the answer to that too.
There are no redeeming qualities when it comes to the construction of the mattress. The coil count disparity is vast. 1,200 high quality coils in a Big Fig vs. their 400 and cheap coils in the Saatva HD. Then they just layer on the cheap foam to make up for their lack of coils.
There are no cooling features in the HD, but we have the best cooling features with our THERMOGEL COOLING ® technology built right in.
So, more expensive, poor construction and a non comparable warranty. This doesn’t sound like a hard decision to us…
Big Fig Vs. Saatva Loom & Leaf
Just like all the others we have reviewed and tested, this option does not meet all the requirements in order to fulfill your needs.
Plus, when we cut into the mattress, it just looks like they added a bunch of extra foam and called it a day.
Then we took a look at their warranty and return policies and it’s riddled with fees.
Click the link above and read on, it’s pretty clear the Big Fig wins this one.
Big Fig Mattress: WINNER
You are probably thinking to yourself “It couldn’t possibly be that there is no other viable option out there for people like me?” Well, the good news is, this is America and you have the freedom to choose and purchase whatever mattress speaks to you best.
The bad news is, if you are a heavier person or couple, we think you will be wasting your time (and sleep) with these options. Then, if you end up unhappy you have the whole hassle of returning the bed and, maybe even some extra money due to return fees, because you didn’t choose a Big Fig in the first place. We are worth the investment .
Our tests concluded that while these are solid mattresses, they just weren’t designed with our plus size friends in mind, and that should tell you all you need to know.
Your purchase of a Big Fig mattress is worry-free. We have the most flexible return policy and the best warranty on the market. Are you ready?Click here
