At Big Fig Mattress, we’ve developed several special techniques to internally test and validate our mattress. We first used these techniques in the R&D phase before launching our mattress to the general public.
We utilized 45 lb. plate weights that are stacked to show the impact and support when up to 270 lbs. of weight is placed on the edge of the mattress to ensure our edge support is the best in class.
This 270 lbs. represents approximately the same “pounds per square inch” of a 550 lb. individual sitting on the edge of the mattress. (note: 550 lbs. is Big Fig’s maximum weight capacity per sleeper).

The weight stress test shows the Big Fig supporting the weight without significant compression. The Titan is compressed significantly, nearly down to the foundation. Brooklyn Bedding manufactures foundations, but they do not offer a specially designed foundation to go with the Titan Mattress. Their Foundation is a standard accessory not specifically designed to support heavier weights.

The Big Fig is constructed with our high-density foam rails along the edges to keep you feeling extra supported and secure in bed. We believe that foam quality is the most important factor when it comes to creating the best edge support mattress & overall softening in all parts of the mattress. We use a combination of 1.8 pcf and 2.5 pcf density foam, compared to Titan's "flex" foam of which they don't specify the density. Titan does include some edge support technology, but it consists of slightly thicker steel coils running to the edge without foam, so the edges are not really supported at all. It just doesn’t stack up against a Big Fig.
Good edge support increases usable sleeping surfaces and prevents premature wear. Big Fig mattresses excel in edge support due to their high-density foam encasement, which offers durability and reinforcement for heavier sleepers. In today’s mattress market, most premium innerspring mattresses use individually wrapped coils, such as those shown in the Big Fig Mattress below. Individually pocketed coils allow them to move independently of one another, preventing motion transfer. Titan also uses individually wrapped coils but only provides up to 961 of them in the King and California King sizes and only 760 in the Queen size.

The foams used to construct the Big Fig Mattress are 50% denser than those used in a standard mattress, including 3 inches of high-density foam cushioning with densities ranging from 1.8 to 2.5 pcf (pounds per cubic foot).
Big Fig’s high-density foam prevents mattress sag, providing the same level of comfort and support for 20 years. With a Big Fig mattress’ high-quality foam, you’ll have a mattress that will never sag. This is compared to Titan's "flex" foam, of which they don't specify the density.
A Titan mattress consists of a 2” foam base, a 2” layer of flexible foam, and a top layer of gel memory foam. We do not provide any soft memory foam in the Big Fig mattress because heavier sleepers tend to sleep “in” these types of foams rather than “on” them. They don’t provide the same support as our system of high-density foams. The Big Fig is also hand-tufted, which enhances its durability and prevents the foam layers from shifting over time, whereas the Titan is not. The process of Hand-Tufting is generally reserved for the highest-priced mattresses on the market, but we think it's critical to support Bigger Figured people and last for 20 years - it's a value add that makes a big difference.
