Big Fig Mattress vs. Layla Hybrid Mattress

5 min read

If you’re looking for the best mattress for heavier people, there’s a lot you should take into account such as the details in craftsmanship, construction, and design. Luckily, when it comes to the Big Fig Mattress vs Layla Hybrid Mattress, we’ll help make your decision easier.

With thousands of satisfied customers and 5-star reviews, the Big Fig’s life-changing sleep speaks for itself. We’re proud to have designed a mattress that provides better rest to the plus size and big & tall community. Serving this community is the singular mission and objective of our company and the products we make. The Big Fig mattress is perfect by design for plus size sleepers no matter how they sleep: side sleepers, back sleepers, hot sleepers, and stomach sleepers rejoice!

While Layla claims that its Hybrid mattress is the perfect blend of supportive coils and comforting copper infused memory foam, we know their mattress falls short in meeting the needs of heavier sleepers. However, we’ll let you decide for yourself. Read on to see how the Layla Hybrid stacks up against the Big Fig.

Design

Let’s start with the basics. Layla’s hybrid mattress is dual sided with each side offering different levels of comfort or support. One side is firmer while the other is softer which is a unique way to give people options, but if you’re only comfortable on one side, iis that really a benefit? Big Fig is a traditional hybrid that provides a consistent mattress which is both comfortable AND supportive. Though it can be rotated, it should never be flipped. Although, when you just don’t dip, why would you need to?

Next up, there’s the foams. While we are evaluating a hybrid mattress, Layla is still using memory foam mattresses whereas Big Fig uses a high-density poly foam that resists body impressions. Memory foam is known for contouring to your body at pressure points and making it difficult to move… not ideal. We will say that Layla’s hybrid held up better than some of the other competitors when it came to support, but looking at this comparison shot with 180lbs sitting atop it, Layla looks like it’s smiling for the camera– good for them, bad for you.

At this point you’re probably wondering how our coils stack up better as well. While Layla offers 1,313 coils in either 14 or 16-gauge, Big Fig’s king mattress uses 1600 15-gauge coils. More coils = more responsive support and less motion transfer. Our pocketed coils also allow for a more form fitting, supportive sleeping experience.

Edge Support

When it comes to edge support, they’ve gone with springs (gasp). Big Fig uses high density ILD (indentation load deflection) foam which essentially means extremely high quality, shape keeping, comfort creating, support giving, super foam. This keeps the center of the mattress supportive and contouring to your body without dumping you over the edge, giving you a broader area of usable sleep space. When we put Layla’s edge support to the test we got nowhere near our goal of 270lbs, which would be a similar weight distribution to a 550lbs person. Do you like falling off your bed in the middle of the night due to a lack of support? Yeah, we didn’t think so.

Finally, we hand-tuft each mattress to keep all the layers of materials secured, preventing dips, gaps or breakdown. Layla Hybrid, no tufts, meaning materials can spread and separate over time.

Manufacturing

Most manufacturing for Layla takes place in several different regions of the U.S., but they do occasionally send materials outside of the U.S. to be cut and sewn during high order volume periods. Big Fig is made in Cleveland, Ohio ONLY and we’re really proud of that!
