At Big Fig we put our plus sized sleepers first, so we’ve researched all the points that matter to you like support, durability and construction. So how do we stack up to Tuft & Needle? We’ll let you make the final decision.

At Big Fig we take pride in creating the perfect mattress for the perfect body. Every aspect of our design was made to combat typical issues that can happen with competitor mattress companies like mattress sag, loss of softness and comfort, poor back and pressure point support, and no edge support. Whether you are a back sleeper, side sleeper or stomach sleeper, Big Fig is there to provide the perfect design for best in class comfort and support for YOU.

To see how we stack up against ALL our competition, be sure to check out the full competitor comparison. We’re here to make sure you’re finding a mattress that’s perfect for you.

DESIGN

One of the biggest aspects of a mattress is the thought behind the design and production. The biggest difference between Big Fig and Tuft & Needle is our commitment to, and focus on, the plus size sleeper. While other competitors will offer a traditional mattress and simply add a few minor tweaks and clever marketing, we begin and end our entire design process with you in mind.

In order to design a mattress that catered to our plus size and big and tall friends, we conducted extensive research on the issues that matter most to heavier sleepers. We sought to combat issues like poor edge support, shifting materials, mattress sagging, and more. To learn more about these problems and how the Big Fig’s design works to address them, click here

What can we say? We found our people and we want to make them as comfortable as possible. We’re experts in helping the plus sized community get better sleep, and we make it our purpose to give you the mattress you deserve.

Tuft & Needle offers three different mattress variations - aka regular foam or MORE foam.

With different design adjustments, it may seem like Tuft & Needle is offering a wide range of options, but we aren’t falling for this marketing ploy. We know we’ve designed a mattress from the ground up specifically for a demographic that deserves more than just a slightly modified standard mattress.

Weight Stress Test

The last thing you wanna worry about while you’re trying to get your beauty sleep is whether you’re going to experience any issues with shifting or sagging or durability. We put our mattresses through rigorous weight testing and the results speak for themselves.

To test weight stress, we took regular 45 lb. weights and stacked them on top of each other to show what The Big Fig looks like when 270 lbs. is placed on the mattress surface.

Why 270 lbs.? This weight is approximately the same “pounds per square inch” of a person weighing 550 lbs., the Big Fig’s maximum weight capacity per sleeper. This 270 lbs. represents approximately the same “pounds per square inch” of a 550 lb. person sitting on the edge of the mattress.

We tested the Tuft & Needle mattress against the Big Fig Mattress. The difference in quality between each mattress can be seen in our head to head comparison below.

After placing the weights, the Big Fig showed some compression, but not a significant amount. The Helix is compressed significantly, nearly down to the foundation. The foam is extremely flattened when compared to the Big Fig. The Tuft & Needle mattresses have a weight capacity of 1,000 lbs for their full, queen, and king sizes (500 lbs. per sleeper) and their Twin/TwinXLs support 500 lbs. The added weight of our test gives a clear image of the difference in weight limits between Big Fig and Tuft & Needle. With Big Fig, you don’t have to worry about your mattress caving in on any part of it; we’re the perfect mattress edge support fix.

Foundation

Each one of our hand-built foundations is made in our factory in Cleveland, Ohio. We use only the highest quality materials and our foundation measures at 7 inches tall - an excellent height for sleepers of all sizes. As shown below, the Big Fig foundation is one of the strongest foundations available on the market with 18 2.5” slats and double center beams and the added support of 2”x 4” blocking in the areas where it’s needed most.

Tuft & Needle does not provide information on the foundation for their mattresses so you just have to hope that they have strong foundations. Meanwhile, Big Fig guarantees a strong foundation so you don’t have to wish for the best because we provide it.

Coil Count & Quality

The modern mattress market is filled with premium innerspring mattresses that use individually wrapped coils to prevent motion transfer. Tuft & Needle’s mattress contains 1462 nano-coils and 1041 individually wrapped base coils on their queen mattress and 1849 nano-coils and 1298 individually wrapped base coils on their king. Though they have more coils, they may not equate to comfort. One thing to note is that they do not provide the gauge of their coils as they consider this “proprietary” info.

On the other hand, the Big Fig Mattress is constructed with a high coil count consisting of 1,200 individually wrapped 15-gauge coils within a Queen mattress and 1,600 in the King and California King sizes. A high coil count with a lower coil gauge contributes to mattress longevity, but it also allows for better motion isolation.

With this construction in mind, with Big Fig, you’ll sleep so deeply you won’t even notice when your partner wakes up in the middle of the night for a glass of water.

Manufacturing

Like Big Fig, Tuft & Needle is also made in America, so we’ll give them that. Big Fig is a proudly family-owned company located in Cleveland, Ohio where every mattress is made with consistency in the same factory we’ve been making mattresses for four generations.

Tuft & Needle mattresses are made in the US with components being sourced locally and overseas. Their CertiPUR certified foams received the GREENGUARD Gold certification for reduced chemical emissions during manufacturing process, so they earn a few points for being green despite their interesting sourcing methods.

Warranty

Big Fig has a comprehensive 20-year, non-prorated warranty that includes both mattress and foundation and covers any and all defects in materials or workmanship, visible body impressions greater than one inch, and charges no transportation costs for repair or replacement.

The bottom line? The Big Fig Mattress is guaranteed for 20 years with an unmatched, full repair and replacement warranty at no additional charge while Tuft & Needle offers a 10 year limited warranty on their mattresses. We think the difference here is pretty clear.

Published Test Results

Tuft & Needle claims to have long-lasting support but does not publish any test results to the public to support their claim. The Big Fig Mattress, meanwhile, was subjected to rigorous testing at a third party facility with a focus on durability and longevity under heavy weight conditions and has published test results.

We proudly display our tests on our website. For example, the Big Fig Mattress underwent a Rollator test that cycled a 350 lb. weight back and forth across the mattress for 200,000 cycles. Test results showed the Big Fig lost only 0.16” of height, which is just 0.01%!

You can watch our Rollator in action here and view our published test results here.
