Big Fig Mattress vs. GhostBed Flex Mattress

·
7 min read

Let’s be honest– finding a good mattress for plus sized sleepers is hard. Many people don’t know where to start and finding the best mattress for heavier people requires careful research of the details in craftsmanship, construction, and design. Luckily, when it comes to the Big Fig Mattress vs GhostBed Flex Mattress, we’ll help make your decision easier.

With thousands of satisfied customers and 5-star reviews, the Big Fig’s life-changing sleep speaks for itself. We’re proud to have designed a mattress that provides better rest to the plus size and big & tall community. Serving this community is the singular mission and objective of our company and the products we make. The Big Fig mattress is perfect by design for plus size sleepers no matter how they sleep: side sleepers, back sleepers, hot sleepers, and stomach sleepers rejoice!

While GhostBed claims that its Flex mattress is the perfect blend of supportive coils and comforting gel memory foam, we know their mattress falls short in meeting the needs of heavier sleepers. However, we’ll let you decide for yourself. Read on to see how the GhostBed Flex stacks up against the Big Fig.

Design

Let’s start with the basic design of each bed. Overall, we’re a bit firmer than GhostBed (7-8 out of 10 vs 6-7), but that is because the GhostBed Flex isn’t actually designed for heavier people. We believe in making a bed that is both comfortable AND supportive. The published maximum weight for the Flex is 750lbs and if you are over 300lbs as an individual they recommend you choose a different (more expensive) mattress from their line, specifically the king size (yes, even if it’s just you). Big Fig has you covered with our 550lbs solo weight limit or 1,100lbs as a couple, because our sole purpose is to support YOU!

Next up there’s the foams. While we are evaluating the Flex (a hybrid mattress), GhostBed is still using memory foam mattresses whereas Big Fig uses a high-density poly foam with layers of comfort that resists body impressions. Memory foam is known for contouring to your body at pressure points and making it difficult to move which is… not ideal. You can see that it also goes flat as a pancake with just 135lbs of weight on it… so there’s that. If you’re really looking for a firm mattress that conforms to your body, the pocketed coils in Big Fig mattresses work a lot better– especially for heavier sleepers.

Edge Support

When it comes to edge support, they’ve gone with springs and this strip of foam to kind of hold it all together. What you can see from our comparison is that those edge springs aren’t really doing you any favors. They crush quickly under just 135lbs and are going to dump you off like a waterslide if you’re at all larger framed. This bed is perfect if you like falling off the edge of your bed and sleeping on the floor.

Big Fig uses high density ILD (indentation load deflection) foam. This keeps the center of the mattress supportive and contouring to your body without dumping you over the edge, giving you a broader area of usable sleep space.

Finally, we hand-tuft each mattress to keep all the layers of materials secured, preventing dips, gaps or breakdown. GhostBed Flex, no tufts.

Manufacturing

We’re both made in America and so for this reason…we’ll call it a draw...ok we aren’t that benevolent. Here’s the thing GhostBed has been in the industry since Y2k was still a used term. Big Fig has been around since 2016, so we lose right? Nope! Secret sauce moment…our manufacturing partners have 100-years of experience in mattress making. That’s a legacy to build off!

Warranty

Ok so we’re all about honesty and this is where they beat us. Ghost Bed is backing their Flex mattress for up to 25-years vs our 20-year warranty. Why don’t we think that’s something we should worry about? Well for one thing…we read the fine print…

“During the first ten (10) years of original ownership, if the mattress is deemed defective, GhostBed, Inc. shall be responsible for the repair or replacement costs of the mattress except for any handling or transportation costs associated with repairs or replacements.

Years 11 through 25 we will, (at our option), repair the mattress at a handling cost to the original owner, or replace the mattress at a prorated charge to the original owner plus transportation costs. If we replace the mattress, the prorated replacement charge will depend on when the mattress is replaced.”

And you must register your warranty after purchasing the mattress to qualify...so just a heads up that this one may not be as good as it sounds on the surface. A great option? We don’t think so.

Return Policy

No body thinks the 10-minute store test is going to give you a sense of whether a mattress works for your body, but there’s getting a feel for your mattress and then there’s...too much. Big Fig asks for 14-nights of your time to let your body adjust to better support. GhostBed requires 30-days minimum so that their mattress can get broken in. You have another 61 days in their trial to process your return within their 101-night trial period. Big Fig has a 120-night sleep trial, which means less required time on the bed to be sure it’s the best bed for you, but more leeway if you’re feeling indecisive. Don’t worry though– we believe our product is the best mattress available for heavy sleepers, so we’re confident it’ll be love at first sleep.
